White Truffles: A Flavorful Delight
Also
known as the diamond of the kitchen, the white truffle is a popular
choice of taste among food lovers. It’s packed with a unique aroma and a
dense earthy that taste best when used in rice, pasta, egg dishes, and
other mouthwatering dishes. Back in the times, the Romans considered the
properties of truffle as therapeutic and had libido-boosting effects.
Italy
has white winter truffle in abundance and so, it is also called a
Piedmont or Alba Truffle. It is usually harvested from October to
December. Even the short winter season adds more quality to the features
that the truffle already has.
White
truffles grow only a little down in the earth in mutualism with oaks,
chestnut, hornbeam, and hazelnut-like hardwood trees. The shape can be
described as irregular in particular and the flesh is pale to light
brown in colour with a white texture around. Rare sizes weight almost
above a pound. So, if you get your hands on one of those, you’re lucky!
There
are certain ways these fragrant fungi can be identified beneath the
surface, one being through the super smelling power of dogs that can
smell them through the surface of the earth. If we rewind back to the
traditional methods, the harvesters used pigs, especially sows (female
pigs) that have a keen sense of seeking truffles as they produce a smell
similar to porcine pheromones.
Why
people buy white truffles online and find them appealing is tricky to
explain. But, its garlic-like flavour can be a possible point for an
explanation. It’s filled with a mixture of animal secretion and minerals
from the underground that justifies its earthy taste. Its distinctive
characteristics make it unforgettable and something that people seek
for.
The
domestication of wild truffles takes a decade to complete and grow.
Though the most reliable source of produce is in nature’s lap.
If you want to include white truffles in a dish of pasta, risotto, or any other dish, avoid cooking them. They have their own strong flavour that can get destroyed if you cook them. You should simply cut or slice them and top your food with the truffles. The heat of freshly cooked food will naturally absorb the flavours and eventually blend with each other.
